MTV does distort the music business to the younger generation. But it's not like the biz hasn't always distorted itself to the young. MTV is one of its most powerful tools. Young people have ideals untempered by life experiences. Young people are the demographic that buys popular music (recorded and glamorized by young people.)

The industry always has and always will try to make itself look very attractive to teenagers and pre-teens. The why-work-when-you-can-be-a-star syndrome. A pitiful fraction of these youngsters lured into its honeyed maw will actually become successful. Far be it from me to quash a kid's dreams.

Talent doesn't always equal success. Travis Barker looks the part much more than Ed Shaughnessy. Kids will buy tattoos over muttonchops any day.
